We know what it’s like to be a busy teenager, overwhelmed parent, hardworking high school teacher, as well as a selective college admissions officer because we’ve been there! Our team has a unique combination of experience that yields expertise in every aspect of the admissions process.
College Karma is a family-owned business that offers honest perspectives and helpful guidance, empowering students to make the decisions that will positively influence their futures. Our college recommendations are not generated by computer algorithms, but are researched and reviewed by our team of experienced counselors. Our essay service features timely feedback and personalized guidance to help students present themselves in the best and most genuine light to admissions committees.
Over twenty years ago, our founders David Berry and Sally Rubenstone, built College Karma on the premise that students can avoid a stressful college search process if they have access to an expert with advice and insight to support them along the way. In 2023, after counseling hundreds of students, David and Sally passed the torch to husband and wife team Kelly Bull and Erik Playe. Erik and Kelly are committed to carrying out College Karma’s mission to help parents and students who are overwhelmed by the college admissions process calmly and confidently navigate their options to find the right college fit.
We are so thrilled to be working as a family with all of our wonderful clients and we hope our expertise can make the journey enjoyable.

Abigail is a writer and editor with 15 years of experience in magazine journalism, online media, and nonprofits. As a former reporter, she's an ace researcher who is great at making calls, asking questions, and tracking down information. On the recommendation of her aunt Ann (and now coworker!), she attended Smith College, where she received a B.A. in Comparative Literature. She also has a Diploma of Culinary Arts, which she puts to good use feeding her two hungry teenagers. Last year, she successfully shepherded her daughter through the college application process, touring campuses from one end of the country to the other to find the right fit, and will do it all over again with her son in 2027!
Kelly is a small business owner and former educator. As a Hope Scholar and graduate of the University of Georgia, she hopes to help students find a school that is as great of a fit for them as UGA was for her.
